Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), in partnership with the British High Commission and Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), hosted a Rhino Naming Dinner at the residence of H.E. Lisa Chesney, the British High Commissioner to Uganda.
The exclusive event brought together members of the diplomatic corps, ambassadors, conservationists, private sector leaders, and other key stakeholders in tourism and wildlife conservation. Beyond being a networking occasion, the dinner provided a platform for strategic dialogue on the critical role of conservation in advancing Uganda’s tourism growth and enhancing the country’s global image under the Explore Uganda – The Pearl of Africa brand.
In her welcome remarks, H.E. Lisa Chesney underscored the importance of the partnership between Uganda and the United Kingdom in promoting conservation and sustainable development. She described the Rhino Naming Campaign as an innovative collaboration that unites conservation, tourism, and cultural diplomacy, demonstrating how collective efforts can drive impact at both local and global levels.
The highlight of the dinner was the opportunity for stakeholders to name and befriend rhinos—a symbolic yet impactful activity designed to raise awareness and support for ongoing rhino conservation programs spearheaded by UWA and its partners. With more than 10 rhinos now named, the initiative has generated widespread excitement ahead of the historic Rhino Naming Ceremony scheduled for 22nd September 2025 at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.
Discussions during the evening emphasized the importance of stronger cross-sector collaboration. Stakeholders explored opportunities to integrate conservation with tourism product development and to design sustainable financing models to safeguard Uganda’s rhino population.
UTB CEO Juliana Kagwa reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to aligning conservation with tourism promotion. She highlighted that rhinos are not only a flagship species for conservation but also an iconic attraction that enriches Uganda’s tourism portfolio.
“Under the Explore Uganda brand, we will continue to spotlight conservation success stories to attract responsible travelers who seek authentic and sustainable experiences,” she emphasized.
As the countdown to the Rhino Naming Ceremony continues, the dinner has set the tone for what promises to be a landmark celebration of conservation, partnership, and the promotion of Uganda as the true Pearl of Africa.
