Uganda and UK Strengthen Collaboration in Tourism and Conservation

The British High Commissioner to Uganda, H.E. Lisa Chesney MBE, recently hosted a high-level meeting at her residence, bringing together leadership from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), along with officials from the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities (MTWA).

The meeting was attended by UWA Executive Director Dr. James Musinguzi (PhD), UTB Chief Executive Officer Juliana Kagwa, Commissioner Tourism MTWA Lyazzi Vivian, Director of Tourism UWA Masaba Stephen, and other key representatives. Discussions focused on strategic areas of collaboration between the United Kingdom and Uganda in tourism and conservation.

Key topics on the agenda included:

  • Support for the forthcoming “Name a Rhino” campaign, aimed at mobilizing international awareness and resources for rhino conservation in Uganda.
  • Tourism product development and refinement to ensure Uganda offers high-quality, tailored experiences that appeal to British travelers, with a focus on wildlife, culture, and adventure.
  • Addressing negative travel advisories and implementing market-specific strategies to position Uganda as a must-visit destination for British tourists.
  • Leveraging shared conservation and heritage values between the two nations.

The discussions underscored a mutual commitment to deepening cooperation, enhancing Uganda’s visibility and competitiveness in the UK tourism market, and supporting conservation and sustainability-focused initiatives. Both sides agreed to follow up with engagements and the development of a joint action plan to accelerate these initiatives in the coming months.

This partnership is expected to contribute not only to the growth of Uganda’s tourism sector but also to the preservation of the country’s unique wildlife heritage, ensuring that conservation and community benefit remain central to tourism development.
