NYEGE NYEGE 2025
Nyege Nyege is one of Africa’s most influential music and cultural festivals, founded in 2013 in Kampala, Uganda, by the Nyege Nyege Tapes collective. Built on a mission to celebrate African underground music, electronic sounds, and cultural diversity, drawing from genres like singeli, gqom, amapiano, kuduro, and experimental electronica, the festival has grown into East Africa’s largest electronic music event.
The name “Nyege Nyege” derives from the Luganda word for an “irresistible urge to dance” and has Swahili connotations of sensuality. Over the years, the event has become a magnet for global audiences while boosting Uganda’s tourism economy. Past editions have faced controversies over perceived “immorality,” but it has solidified as a cultural institution promoting creativity, inclusion, and solidarity.
A Landmark 10th Anniversary
This year’s festival marked its 10th anniversary under the theme Ekigunda Ky’Omuliro (“The Gathering of the Flame”), symbolizing a decade of igniting African creativity.
Held from November 20–23, 2025, shifting to a new exciting venue for a more immersive riverside experience: Adrift Overland Camp & River Club, overlooking Kalagala Falls (58 km from Kampala) on the Nile River on your way to the adventure capital, Jinja District, Uganda (about 80 km east of Kampala).
The riverside setting offered stunning views, immersive nature, and easy access to adventure activities like bungee jumping and white-water rafting. A specially designed “cosmic layout” featured six stages blending natural landscapes and innovative designs fused into the landscape – enhancing the festival’s signature futuristic-meets-natural aesthetic.
Sustainability and accessibility were prioritized through expanded camping/glamping options, responsible waste management, and strengthened partnerships with local communities.
Tickets ranged from early-bird prices around $42 USD for multi-day passes, sold out via the official site. The event featured non-stop music across four days, visual art installations, fashion showcases, workshops, and tourism tie-ins like Nile rafting excursions.

Attendance and Economic Impact
While official numbers are still being consolidated, thousands of attendees from over 30 countries participated. The local-to-international ratio remained close to 62% Ugandans and 38% foreign travelers.
This continues the festival’s strong economic influence—2024’s edition drew 26,000 visitors and injected an estimated $2 million USD (UGX 6.62 billion) into Uganda’s economy through accommodation, transport, food, local vendors, and short-term employment.
The 2025 festival boosted Jinja’s hospitality sector, with increased hotel occupancy and strong business for local vendors despite a few logistical challenges such as venue remoteness and underutilised adventure partnerships.
A spectacular fireworks display closed the festival on November 23.
