UTB, KCCA to position Kampala City as top tourist destination

Kampala, Uganda, Tuesday 30th November, 2021: Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) and Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop and promote tourism in Kampala through tourism product development, quality assurance of hotel and accommodation facilities and promotion of tourism awareness in the City.

The partnership agreement signed at the Kampala Capital City Head Offices in Kampala; will promote Kampala City as a top tier tourism destination and gateway to Uganda’s premium tourism products.

In the MoU, both parties will;

  • Develop tourism products to increase on the tourism offer within the city district,
  • Compile and disseminate tourism information in promotion of Kampala City and Uganda as a preferred tourism destination,
  • Coordinate and execute joint inspections of tourism enterprises in Kampala for quality assurance and standard enforcement,
  • Organise and support social events that highlight Kampala and Uganda’s historical and cultural diversity,
  • Enhance tourism education/awareness and conservation in the public and private schools in Kampala City,
  • Build capacity for tourism human resource in tourism enterprises within the city,
  • Circulate information about tourism enterprises and services within Kampala

Commenting on the MoU, Uganda Tourism Board CEO – Lilly Ajarova, revealed, “This partnership is aimed at promoting destination Kampala not only as the access route to destination Uganda’s prized tourism sites and attractions, but also, work together to ensure quality assurance and standards in the hospitality places, embark on tourism product development for the existing city based tourism sites. These sites include: Landmarks, monuments, streets, royal sites, water bodies, among many others that make Kampala sight- seeing an unforgettable experience.”

She added, “In line with our mandate, we will work with KCCA to ensure Kampala City becomes one of the top destinations in Uganda and the region. With its huge tourism offering in history and culture, there is no doubt that our City can reap big from tourism especially with our domestic tourists.

On her part, KCCA ED, Dorothy Kisaaka revealed that Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is delighted to partner with Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) to make Kampala city a vibrant destination for guests coming to Uganda and East Africa as a whole.

She said, “Kampala is the face of this country and as a City; it has potential to attract visitors. This potential stems from its own natural form, sense of place, sense of history, spirit and other ethos. As City administrators, we are ambitious to delivering a Vibrant, Attractive and Sustainable City to Ugandans and visitors.

She added, “One of the things we’ve been longing for as KCCA is to set up a fountain, as things like this have a way they minister to us, plus also, we are optimistic towards setting up a forest in the city with various tree species, plus establish a gardens where people can set up picnics and enjoy their city without looking at just the infrastructure but enjoy the various things therein. KCCA alone cannot achieve an admirable, attractive and hospitable City unless we work with stakeholders with common interest like UTB.”
