Museveni asks Barca legends to return

President Museveni has asked Barcelona Legends to visit Uganda again.

The Barcelona Legends, who played a charity match against a select Ugandan side on Saturday, were hosted by Museveni at State House, Entebbe on Friday.

“I am very happy to welcome FC Barcelona here,” Museveni said in his opening remarks during the dinner. “I am not very illiterate about European clubs. In my young days, I used to engage in football but I was quickly diverted away to other important duties. “And the only time I have been in court was because of football. Instead of looking after my father’s cows, I engaged in football activity and they escaped and ate somebody’s crops. I was taken to the court of the chiefs and I pleaded guilty.”

The evening was all about merrymaking for the former Catalan players, who had earlier visited Bwindi Forest and the Murchison Falls National Park courtesy of Uganda Tourism Board (UTB).

“I laud UTB for this initiative of promoting tourism using these former stars. This was a very good idea of selling our country and I urge you to return and visit other places like Mountain Rwenzori. Uganda is a unique part of the world that should be known to the rest of the world,” Museveni noted. He was one of the chief financial backers of the initiative. Museveni praised the charity match’s architect Rayco Garcia.

“I am very happy with my friend’s (Rayco) plans of building an academy here and groom talent at a young age. We should follow it up so that we don’t lose this opportunity,” said Museveni. Dutchman Patrick Kluivert gave Museveni a Barcelona replica jersey emblazoned with No.7, in appreciation of his hospitality.
